4 Must Eat Traditional Hari Raya Foods

May 30, 2019

Hari Raya is coming up! With Ramadan (holy month of fasting) coming to an end, it is time to prepare for the Hari Raya festivities and celebrations! Here are some of the traditional foods that are a must to enjoy during the Hari Raya celebrations!

Ketupat

Ketupats are an essential food that you must enjoy during Hari Raya celebrations! They are steamed rice cakes that are packed in iconic diamond-shaped woven palm leaf pouches. As ketupats are considered a staple, you can enjoy them with a variety of other delicious foods and snacks! Some examples include, Ketupat Sayur, Gado-Gado and many more!

Lontong

This steamed rice cake dish is served in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. This dish is made from compressed rice wrapped in banana leaves (unlike Ketupats that are wrapped in palm leaves). In Singapore, you can often find lontong served with a coconut based soup that is accompanied with seafood and chopped vegetables. This main dish is often served with other side dishes.

Satay

A crowd favourite among all Singaporeans, satay is not only an Indonesian and Malay dish, but is also close to the hearts of all Singaporeans. It is a convenient snack to eat when visiting relatives during Hari Raya. Enjoy it with sweet peanut sauce while chatting with relatives!

Dodol

Dodols are the asian equivalent of toffees! These sweet treats are made from coconut milk, gula melaka and rice flour. They come in a variety of different flavours besides the original gula melaka flavour. One of the most popular flavours is Durian! Some other flavours also include, jackfruit, soursop, pineapple and yam. The variety of flavours and colours make these treats popular among both adults and children alike!
